The Power of Music
Posted on February 23, 2008
Listening to music provokes thought. It can bring back a memory, it can stir an emotion, or it can inspire an idea.
I love how I can listen to certain songs, and it takes me right back to a time when that song was in my life. I was listening to Nothing But You by Paul Van Dyk earlier and it reminded me of vacationing with my family in Nags Head, NC three years ago. Another song Harmonic by Unwritten Law reminds me of snowboarding like ten years ago with my friends Mike, Damon, and Tommy.
When I listen to Superstar by Sonic Youth, which is a cover of the Carpenters original, it makes me sad, but in a happy kind of way. U2 songs like With or Without You and One just make me feel good inside. They make me feel human. Jack Johnson has some great feel-good songs as well. In fact, it’s hard for me to listen to a song and not ‘feel’ something. Songs paint pictures with my emotions. Good music makes me feel good.
Certain music gives me inspiration. I am always thinking and trying to create something from nothing. I think that is one of my life’s purposes, to create things which are truly unique. My mind is the key to many great things, and music helps unlock the doors to great ideas. If I have a lot on my mind, music can also help me sort things out and allow me to think clearly on matter. Paul Van Dyk makes the best music in the world for thinking. I may have that guy to thank one day when I get ‘the big idea’.
I installed a music player on this blog using an imeem.com playlist tonight, and listening to all the songs on the list got me thinking about how cool and how powerful music really is.

The other night my daughter’s choir sang “We are the Reason” by Avalon..I had never heard it before..but it was beautiful. Its my new favorite christmas song. They also sang Spirit of the Season from Polar express.
I think every year I have new favorites…but my all time favorite is a huge choir (like the mormon tabernacle choir) singing O Holy Night. That first ‘fall on your knees’ gets me every time.
